Duty rates on boats and yachts used to be 1.5%. The current assessments have increased import costs from 11.5% to over 50% in some cases. The increase in duty payments has had a strong impact on the boating industry.
A Marine Free Trade Zone is an area approved by the Department of Commerce and controlled by US Customs that allows boats and yachts to be placed duty-free while they are offered for sale.
MFTZs benefit dealers and brokers by allowing them to go through the process of showing and selling without additional duties or tariffs. In turn, the zone creates an opportunity for marinas to retain current customers and to attract new businesses, both domestic and international.
In this webinar, we will discuss the background of Free Trade Zones and the unique aspects of a Marine Free Trade Zone. We will talk about the benefits and the few restrictions. Lastly, we will discuss, in general terms, the application process, timelines, and estimated costs.
Speaker: Jay Reynolds, Customs Broker, JP Reynolds Company Inc.
