Job Overview

 
The Operations/Assistant Manager is a highly responsible administrative and supervisory position in directing and coordinating the activities at the Marina. This Employee is responsible to the General Manager for assisting in management and operations of the Marina. Work is performed according to established policies and in coordination with the General Manager using the latitude for independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures.
 
The Operations Manager will be responsible directly to the General Manager. The Operations Manager must be versatile in all aspects of the Marina Operations. This person will assume the duties of the General Manager in his/her absence.
 
The Operations Manager is responsible for conducting daily business at the Marina. His/her duties include long and short-term planning and implementation in all phases of Marina management as directed by the General Manager. These duties are to be carried out while maintaining an exceptionally high  degree of safety, aesthetic appeal and customer satisfaction. The Operations Manager is a "problem solver" capable of close attention to detail in matters of personnel, customer service, facility upkeep, and facility operations.

Requirements
 
Duties
 
  1. Coordinating dockhands and helpers to ensure safe, smooth and effective docking, maintenance and housekeeping.
    1. Instill in all Employees safe working practices.
    2. Set daily assignments and schedules.
  2. Maintain grounds, equipment and buildings in such a manner that they are aesthetically and operationally at best and within all legal requirements.
    1. Identification of maintenance, repair and housekeeping needs; with supervisors, establish priorities and a timetable to schedule work.
    2. Keep accurate check lists and records of maintenance and repairs as required (including docks, piers, emergency and safety equipment, outside lighting, etc.)
    3. Be aware of expense budgets for maintenance and operate within.
  3. Maintain supply inventories for maintenance and cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, tools, oil spill equipment and filters.
  4. Assistance in special Marina functions.
  5. Proficiency in VHF base radio operations.
  6. Know correct hurricane, storm, fire, first aid, freeze and oil spill procedures; coordinate activities of deckhands and helpers during implementation of these procedures.
  7. Know all local regulations and contractual provisions and enforcement policies. Keep a good working relationship with the Coast Guard, local law enforcement, etc.
  8. Assume additional responsibilities as assigned in the absence of the General Manager.
  9. Assist in training all dock hands and launch boat operators.
  10. Any other duties as assigned by the Marina Management.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
Thorough knowledge of general boat handling, mooring and docking practices applicable to the operation and use of Marina facilities. In addition, one must have Wet and dry Marina experience, good working knowledge of boat operations and proven management background required. Knowledge of modern Office methods, equipment and procedures; knowledge of standard safety precautions and first aid procedure; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with owners and renters.
 

Special Skills or Training Required
 
  1. Previous experience in Marina operations and/or Marina use. Extensive and varied salt or fresh {as called for in your area} water boat operating background is essential. Boat handling skills required.
  2. High school education essential, some college education desirable, trade school or boating and business-related courses desirable such as the Intermediate/Advanced Marina Management Courses.
  1. Basic business skills - requires ability to assist in preparation of budget projections and keeping abreast of current account balances.
Requires ability to devise and implement profit making or cost reducing programs or procedures and must be capable of preparing monthly business activity reports.
  1. Supervisory skills - must be capable of training personnel in all Marina tasks and must have past experience in coordinating schedules and activities of hourly personnel and ensuring that Employees fulfill job requirements safely, efficiently and courteously. Individual must also have the respect of his/her Employees in the supervisor's role and must be willing to help establish goals and objectives for Marina personnel and help them obtain these goals.
  2. Other duties or qualifications.
    1. Ability to operate most any boat skillfully.
    2. Basic understanding of mechanical skills.
    3. Local geographical knowledge of waterways.
  3. Communication skills
    1. Written reports, marina publication articles, etc.
    2. Supervisory and customer relation communications both written and oral.
 
Work Schedule
 
Since the Operations Manager is going to be second in command in overall responsibility for the Marina, She/He will be working as the job requires and is on call for all storms and emergencies. The Dockmaster will need to coordinate with the Operations Manager on the hours to be worked.
